CodeTank Labs and the Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachia partnered in the fall of 2020 to help the girls earn their coding badge. The girls ranged from 5 years old to 8 years old.
We started with teaching the girls the importance of details in coding by building a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Krista, a developer with CTL played the role of a computer and the girls were the developers. The girls had to give her commands, down to picking up the knife and opening the jars. We started out with a jar of peanut butter sitting on top of a loaf of bread, but in the end, once the girls figured out the details were in important, we had our sandwich!
We ended the night with a little fun on the Oculus quest. The girls had a blast playing Beat Saber, and experiencing the world of virtual reality.
The girls were able to earn their coding badge! It was a blast partnering with the Girl Scouts of Southern Appalachia, and we hope to continue to do this in the future.
